Badge Stress
The Stress skill suite represents Sadie's knack for defying dastardly desperadoes, slipping out of sticky situations, and prevailing (or at least surviving) in a pinch. It is similar to the Dream skill suite because of its connection to a score that can rise and fall -- in this case, Sadie's accumulation (through blunders, worries, and hair-raising escapes) and reduction (through more recuperative or relaxed activities) of Stress points. For every full 10 points of Sadie's current Stress level, the Expansion Bonus for Awareness, Dodge, Escape Artistry, Fisticuffs and Moxie is increased by 1.

While several of these have a fair number of applications in capers, don't forget that leaving Sadie's Stress level high during a caper will severely increase the difficulty of all Obstacles she encounters.

A Brief Digression: Calculating Difficulty for Non-Normal Modes of Gameplay Edit

{doesn't this belong on a general Capers or Obstacle page? It's technically unrelated to Stress any time Sadie approaches an Obstacle with 0 Stress}

Let's say the base difficulty is 8, and Sadie has a Stress modifier of 4.

The Normal difficulty for that obstacle will be 12 (8 + 4)

Take that 12, multiply by 0.5: 12 x 0.5 = 6, so 6 is the difficulty in Easy mode.

Take that 12, multiply by 1.5: 12 x 1.5 = 18, so 18 is the difficulty in Hard mode.

What if [base difficulty] + [Stress modifier] is an odd number? In this case both Easy and Hard difficulties turn out to be an "and a half" number: for example, a Normal difficulty of 11 becomes either 5.5 (Easy) or 16.5 (Hard).

Of course, there are no Skills or Inspirations that can be increased in increments of 0.5, but this turns out to be irrelevant because Python rounds down fractions; i.e. in the last example, 5.5 becomes 5, 16.5 becomes 16.

  • In this sense, Easy and Hard modes confer a very slight, relative, technical advantage, because their difficulties (when the base+Stress is odd) will always be 0.5 'easier' than a strict calculation would indicate. (The alternative, rounding up the fraction, would put Sadie at a more significant disadvantage in Easy mode, but a less noticeable one in Hard.)
