Today, I was chatting with Professor Hemsworth after class, and he let it slip that a collection of paintings by John Burnu MacFarquhar was stolen recently.
Apparently, the local Australian underworld believes the only painting left leads to a gigantic Australian diamond. Of course, once I heard there was an archaeological mystery afoot I made arrangements to take a look! And the other students say they don't learn anything interesting in lecture...!
I met with two of Professor Hemsworth's contacts, Nardu Warook and Dr. Pavier, about those mysterious paintings. It turns out Kate Leigh took the collection of paintings, all except a picture of a platypus. She must be after the diamond! I was told to look up Dr. Elizabeth Eora for more information.
After Nardu and I got some info from Dr. Eora and picked up Anna, we were able to get a photograph of the last remaining painting, even if Kate Leigh's thugs did try to waylay us. We took the film to the police station, where Sgt. Lillian Armstrong developed it for us.The platypus painting is a key clue into finding the diamond. The only problem is... I'm not sure what it's trying to tell me. Maybe I could find more clues back at the police station.
After finding photos of all the paintings and piecing them together, we were able to construct a map with written instructions, but I needed a guide.
Nardu said he had the perfect man: Zul al Zan, the famous archaeologist-turned-tomb-robber-turned-mercenary.
Nardu tried to misdirect us for some reason, but now we know: the diamond is definitely somewhere near the water! Dr. Eora mentioned that my dad had fought a shark while looking for the same jewel, so I have an idea about where to go next. I just need to collect Zul back at the local saloon, and off we go!
It turns out Nardu's been hiding the location of the diamond all along. At first I was angry, but then I saw his point... the gem is sacred to his people.
Of course he would worry about it being taken and put on display, to get gawked at night and day. But better a museum than a bunch of common thugs.
With Nardu's permission, and help, I'm headed to the lighthouse at Shark Island to look for the diamond.
I found the diamond... but I think it's safer where it is than in a museum after all. I know Kate's in prison now, but eventually she'll get out. Besides, Nardu needs that diamond where it is... as a beacon of light, and hope for his people.Maybe I didn't get the treasure in the end, but I'm just happy I was able to help Nardu feel his traditions are safe.
